Severino Lopez, the surviving Venezuelan suspect in last Friday’s attack on the Malinmar Hotel, has claimed that he and his associate were hired to kidnap hotel owner Rahat Ally and take him to Suriname.
This was revealed yesterday by police officials in Georgetown, who said that they are now attempting to ascertain the motive for the attempted kidnapping.
Lopez’s associate, Robielkis Robigcel Monte Deoca Arias, died at the Skeldon Hospital on Saturday after complaining of feeling unwell.
According to the officials, Lopez, who speaks some English, claimed that someone had paid them to abduct Ally and take him to a Suriname cattle ranch.
According to reports, the two Venezuelans had rented a room at the Malinmar Hotel at Springlands, Corentyne.
At around 20:00 hrs on Friday, the ‘guests’ complained that their shower was not working.
When Ally responded to their complaint, they held him at gunpoint.
It appears that the Venezuelans’ plans went awry when they decided to rob Ally rather than fleeing immediately with him. However, Ally put up a fight and was struck in the head with a handgun. Kaieteur News was told that an employee heard the commotion and contacted the Springlands Police Station, which is located in close proximity to the hotel.
The kidnappers were therefore forced to flee without their victim. The suspects headed to the river, where they stabbed a speedboat owner and took his boat.
However, they were intercepted during a brief shootout with ranks from the Berbice Anti-Smuggling Squad (BASS).
It is alleged that one of the Venezuelans, Deoca Arias, sustained a cut over his left eye. He was taken to the Skeldon Hospital, where the injury was sutured.
However, it is alleged that, at around 08:00 hrs on Saturday, while in police custody, Arias complained of feeling unwell. He was admitted to the Skeldon Hospital, where he succumbed.
An autopsy is likely to be performed on his remains today.
