Guyana Schoolgirls Windball Cricket team edged even closer to replicating their last year’s 5-0 performance when they defeated Trinidad and Tobago by five runs in the 4th 20/20 match yesterday at the National Park Tarmac. Sent in to bat after losing the toss, the Guyanese rattled up 114-5 off the revised 15 overs which was due to a late start.
Akaze Thompson belted a quick-fire 37 which included five fours, while Guyana’s Captain Kattie Ann Punch, who has had a terrific tournament so far, contributed 20 with 2 boundaries.
Bowling for the Trinidadians, Loretta Eligon grabbed 2-8 off 3 overs and Shayan Martyr supported with 2-14 from 3.
In reply, T&T posted a stiff challenge, but eventually fell short, ending on 109-8. Captain Chantel Emanuel top-scored with 25 including 4 boundaries and Akala Sheppard scored 23 to be among the runs again.
Punch returned with the ball to pick up 2-22 from 3 overs. The final game is set for 15:00 hrs today, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, President of the T&T National Primary Schools Cricket League, Anthony Ramjit, speaking after the match congratulated the organisers Al Sport & Tour Promotions and the Guyana Teachers Union for putting together a well run tournament, adding that they have truly enjoyed the hospitality and treatment they’ve received on the tour so far.
He revealed that his Body has been given the mandate from the T&T Government to develop both boys and girls cricket across the island and this tour according to him has been a learning experience for the players which he is sure will serve them well in the future.
He said that players such as Dwayne Bravo, Daren Ganga have all come through the same system and everyone knows what they’ve gone on to achieve.
The President added that the tour apart from aiding in the development of on-field skills can also help develop life skills which will benefit the two countries and by extension the entire Caribbean region.
Also, at the conclusion of yesterday’s game, Chief Executive of Cacique Inc. an entity that deals with Finance and Management Developers Chateram Ramdihal presented two trophies to Al Sport’s Kwebena Wright for the two Player-of-the-Series awards.
Ramdihal in brief remarks said he was extremely heartened to see the camaraderie among the players who he noticed came from a wide cross section of the society including the visitors as well.
