The Alpha United Football Club/CARIFESTA 16-team Football Festival kicked off in fine style on Emancipation night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
Honours were shared evenly on the night as the pride of Linden Bakewell Topp XX arrested the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who have been kicking up a storm in the Cellink Plus Premier League in the City, 2-0 while all was not lost for the city as Fruta Conquerors needled home team Silver Shattas.
Both games were keen contests but it was the GDF/Topp XX clash that had all the spectators talking of the manner in which the Army fell to their defeat.
The fit and disciplined Bakewell boys outplayed the GDF by controlling the run of play while maintaining their formation throughout the encounter. The 5-time Kashif and Shanghai champions have proven once again why they are the knockout artistes in Guyana.
Shavane Seaforth sent Topp XX into the lead after 31 minutes from the spot after an infringement in the area. And the win was completed at the half way mark when Keiron Cameron nailed his shot in the 45th minute.
The second half did not produce any more goals as Topp XX sealed their quarter-final place, the Army walking the plank.
The Fruta Conquerors/Silver Shattas encounter also proved to be a tight affair as far as goal scoring was concerned but it was the city side which held their nerves to come out on top.
It took Conquerors until 9 minutes before the final whistle to break the deadlock, Devon Forde hitting the winner.
The battle for the top prize of 1 million dollars will continue on August 9. Bakewell Buxton Stars lock horns with Rosignol United while B.V. Triumph United will match skills with West Demerara’s Pouderoyen.
These matches will be contested at the Plaisance Community Centre ground. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
