Two men, using a speedboat, came to Guyana and attacked the Malinmar Hotel at Springlands. It turned out that their attack was ill-fated. They were caught some 10 minutes after the attack, while trying to hijack a vessel to escape to Suriname.
Reports from the Corentyne say that, shortly after 20:00 hours, two men stormed the hotel with a view to committing a robbery. In the process they stabbed the owner.
A source on the Corentyne says that the room in which the stabbing took place was blood-splattered. The daughter of the hotel owner later said that the attack took place under unusual circumstances.
Late last night, people close to the hotel said that the men in custody are Venezuelans.
The ranks at the Criminal Investigation Department in Springlands could not be reached to confirm the nationality of the bandits. All one rank would say was that the men were being interrogated.
According to reports, the two men now in custody, one of them identified as Severino Lopez, had rented a room at the hotel. They subsequently made a report that the water was not running in their room.
When the owner of the hotel, Rahat Ally, responded, the men tied him up with duct tape and proceeded to rob the place.
They also stabbed him in the neck and in the head. Last night, his condition was said to be stable. It is unclear how much money the men managed to nab.
The men then attempted to make good their escape, hijacking a boat behind the hotel, given that the river is located behind the hotel. The fleeing bandits stabbed the owner of the boat they had intended to use to get away.
He was identified as a Dutch national; and according to reports from Berbice, he was taken back to Suriname. His wounds were also not considered life threatening.
Reports to the police caused them to respond promptly, and their diligence led to the instantaneous arrest of the men.
According to reports, when the police responded to the robbery, the men shot at them. Whether a firearm was recovered was still unclear.
