Plans are being implemented to ensure that minibus drivers are well educated on how to utilise public roadways with immense care and precaution, with a view to reducing the level of dangerous driving in the public transportation arena.
At least this is according to President of the Guyana Public Transportation Association, Mr Nicholas Nnamani.
During a recent interview with this newspaper, Mr Nnamani said that the number of accidents and resulting deaths and injuries have become a very disturbing trend that should be curbed as soon as possible.
It is for this reason, he said, that the GPTA has made a proposal to its members to have all drivers of minibuses be thoroughly educated on the proper use of the roadways, hence reducing the prevalence of dangerous drivers.
Dangerous drivers, according to Mr Nnamani, constitute those drivers who would have been involved in fatal accidents at some point of their career.
He said that while the GPTA does not intend to pass judgement on who should or should not be drivers, the entity feels that there is a need to enlighten drivers on the need for keeping the roadways safe.
He explained that, once the proposal gains consensus among members of the association, it will be put in place soon after.
The proposal, Nnamani said, outlines that the names of all current minibus drivers be registered, with a view to ensuring that they are all educated on how to use the roadways with safety in mind.
According to the GPTA president, some insurance companies are already trying to put measures in place to have drivers registered.
He said it is hoped that the insurance companies and GPTA can work in collaboration to put mechanisms in place for that common purpose.
Mr Nnamani said that the GPTA has as its objective to look at the situation holistically, and it will endeavour to channel necessary changes to help improve the transportation service.
And in order to ensure that minibus operators and drivers have a good understanding of the proposal, he said, the GPTA is streamlining a sensitisation seminar, which will be held later this month.
In addition to raising awareness of the need to have safer roadways, Mr Nnamani said, the issues of behaviour, dress code and other factors will be addressed extensively and in a comprehensive manner.
With the steps being taken by the GPTA, it is anticipated that the roadways will become safer, with less fatal accidents and more courteous operators in the transportation arena.
