The return of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Junior Championships will take place in Antigua for the first time in the competition’s history from August 12–18 at the JSC Sports Complex.
According to a Eurobasket News release, five men’s teams and three women’s teams have confirmed participation in the event, which was originally set to take place in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The release, published on Eurobasket’s website, noted that the venue change came as a result of the original hosts’ financial incapability. “…the country pulled out because of their financial woes,” the website reported.
“Due to the changes, the starting date was shifted to August 12 instead of August 6 (as was) previously stated,” the release continued.
The Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) confirmed that they are fully prepared “to welcome the tournament and provide the best possible conditions for all the participants.”
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) had identified participation in the event as one of its top priorities this year. But according to the federation, the under–16 age range posed difficulties for them.
The CBC Executive had amended the rules of the tournament to move the age limit from under–20 to under–16. Technical Coordinator for the GABF, Robert Cadogan said that caused immense selection problems.
Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport earlier this week that it would not have been possible for the local basketball authority to field a competitive under–16 team at such short notice given the pool of players currently available.
He said that the GABF, after failing to encourage the Washington D.C. Jammers this year, will have to engage its senior and junior teams otherwise to help prepare the former for the CBC Senior Championships next year.
