Speaking at the closing of the second meeting of the CARICOM Secretary-General and Heads of Community institutions, head of the climate change delegation, Dr. Ulric Trotz, said that adapting to climate change will be very costly.
Dr Trotz, the scientific advisor of Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), was addressing a question from the media about efforts to advance the region’s agenda on climate change.
“From our work on the mainstreaming of adaptation to climate change project, we have some notion as to how much it will be, and it’s going to be very expensive,” Dr Trotz said.
According to Dr Trotz, a regional strategy paper for climate change was considered and drafted.
He added that the paper has been circulated to all countries in the region, and to critical institutions which will form part of the consortium of institutions that will address different aspects of the problem.
“Once we arrive at consensus of this strategy, we will be using that to inform activities and basically look for the resources for the implementation.
So the strategy paper, we think, is critical in terms of defining the activities which we will have to undertake, and we will look for resources with the support of CARICOM in approaching the donor community to finance our activities.”
Essentially, he pointed out, they are looking at how to deal with climate change and tourism, agriculture, water, health and coastal development.
According to him, from their work so far, these are the sectors that are seen as greatest risks as a result of climate change, so there are several actions basically addressing the vulnerability of these different sectors to climate change.
This, he added, hopefully forms the basis of an action programme which will be looking at these issues. He pointed out that forestry is one issues on that agenda.
Dr Trotz noted that looking at how to transform the water sector throughout the region to deal with climate change will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
“The message really is that adaptation to climate change will not be cheap. It’s going to cost.”
Secretary-General of CARICOM, Dr. Edwin Carrington, noted that not adapting to climate change will be even more costly.
