Two utility poles yesterday fell at around 11:15hrs yesterday in Princes Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, startling the residents in that area and threatening many with electrocution. The homes in the area of the fallen poles accommodate numerous small children.
Residents stated that reports were made to the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) about the inclined utility poles and the consequential accidents that may occur if they should topple.
They said that the response was that the people at the power company were preoccupied with other important issues.
Kaieteur News understands that numerous utility poles in Princes Street are inclined to fall. Some residents said that they heard cracking sounds and saw small boys and horses running when the incident occurred.
They said that they were astonished when they saw the sparking poles falling one after the other.
One resident stated that GPL was contacted as soon as the poles toppled but arrived half an hour later. Someone could have been injured had they been standing at the spot, one resident said.
During the recent squall, the support beam of a utility pole fell on a car in Princes Street, severely damaging the rear windscreen and denting the roof of the vehicle.
And at approximately 10:30 hours, yesterday, less than an hour before the Princes Street poles collapsed, a utility pole on Mandela Avenue came crashing down and only the wires strung overhead prevented it from falling to the ground.
Those very wires ended up dangling over the road. Some time after, personnel from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Company were seen attempting to rectify the problem.
When questioned about the problem, the GPL personnel on site were tight lipped and claimed ignorance of what had happened.
