The Parrot like many others would be joining in the celebrations of the 174th anniversary of Emancipation form slavery.
The celebrations on this, the first day of August, can be seen as ushering in others billed for the same month, namely Folk Festival and Carifesta X.
I just hope that the colours of my plumage would not become hidden from the many colours that would be splashed at the various venues; and I do possess some bright colours.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend greetings to my African brothers and sisters on this auspicious day. Their ancestors have endured and their efforts have not been in vain.
This is evident in the achievements of their descendants in all strata of society; from sports to politics. This space would not be enough to list those who have excelled in the various areas and who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Guyana, contributions which would forever remain part of the rich history of our nation.
Like every society, Guyana has people who are committed to continuous development and those who are not. The efforts of the former must be commended and those of the latter be condemned.
This nation was built by hard work and sacrifices by our ancestors from the various continents. The common lesson they taught is that hard work through honesty does pay off and that giving up should not be an option.
Think of what would have happened if those who led the struggles for the abolition of slavery and the ending of Indentureship had given up or had succumbed to distraction.
In the same vein, those who toil tirelessly today for our nation’s development must not be distracted by those whose focus is it to denigrate the nation.
However, on an occasion like this, those with “larger minds” and whose focus is on the “bigger picture”, must be encouraged to encourage those with “small minds” and whose focus is on negativity, to join the efforts of nation building. After all, this land is for all of us and there is enough room.
Every nation has its problems, but not very often we see these problems being used as a tool to tarnish its name.
Here, some, especially in sections of the media, seem unconcerned about the harm that is unfairly brought upon Guyana by their seemingly reckless and agenda driven execution of their duties.
When the country is affected all are. This is what they should understand when “painting” their “picture”.
174 years ago the slaves were emancipated; 174 years after, the mentality of some is yet to be.
Bob Marley urged the emancipation from mental slavery; the Parrot would like to echo those who urged emancipation from negativity. Just like how “milk does a body good”, emancipation from negativity does a nation good.
HAPPY EMANCIPATION.
