The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) yesterday held a muster to confirm the establishment of its first ever association to be formed for the retired members.
The meeting was as a result of the recent award ceremony for the retired members of GPSU.
A group of former members requested that the ceremony be held so that they could officially launch the association to be recognized as a concerned group of citizens.
They also wanted to aid in the development of the union and to address matters that occur in lives of its current members everyday.
The congregation consisted of former public servants, some of whom traveled from the rural parts of the country to attend to express their gratitude and concern for the continuous development of the union.
The group was assembled by the First Vice President of GPSU, Mr. Herman De Souza, who confessed that the union has failed to keep track of its retired members, whom he declared have all contributed a great lot towards the existence of the union.
De Souza said that of 40 members that were contacted by the union, 35 gave their assurance that they would be a part of the newly found association.
Among the former members present was Joseph Goddard, the General Secretary of the Barbados General Workers Union (BGWU) who shared his views on the purpose of the establishment as a mean of getting involved in an activity that could be both rewarding to themselves and the union.
At the meeting, workers divided themselves into two groups to decide on a name for the newly formed association, its objectives and terms of reference.
At the end of the convention they would be presented and the better of the two groups’ opinion would be selected.
