Volunteer Youth Corps (VYC) yesterday received a donation to the tune of some $267,000 from Food for the Poor Guyana Inc.
During a simple presentation ceremony, Food for the Poor handed over 15 portable sewing machines to Chief Executive Officer of the Volunteer Youth Corps, Ms Goldie Scott.
Making the presentation on behalf of the charitable organisation was Food for the Poor Public Relations Officer Michelle Branker. According to Branker, the donation resulted from a request by VYC.
She said that her organization decided to satisfy the request since Food for the Poor is always in support of making life better for the less fortunate.
“We are aware that the machines will be used for skills training which we fully endorse since this would make people less dependent on the organization but instead be equipped with a skill that would in turn assist them in making an income,” Branker noted.
VYC’s Livelihood Development Coordinator, Randy Beckles, said that the organization is very appreciative of the donation.
According to Beckles, the donation is very timely. Beckles added that the machine will now complement their Enhancing Employability Programme where some 15 women are being trained in various areas.
He said those involved in the sewing course will now be able to do the practical aspect of the course.
