The fire that occurred in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo at around 19:30 hrs on Sunday may have resulted from an electrical problem that the family had at the house.
The fire has since left three persons homeless — Kumarie Jairam, her husband Rammnarace Jairam, and their three-year-old son Govin Jairam.
The family was not at home at the time of the fire.
Kumarie Jairam’s father, Hardeo, told Kaieteur News yesterday that the meter at the house was not working for some time previously. Everyone else in the community was receiving electricity except his daughter’s house, he said.
Subsequently, he said, GPL came and fixed the problem. Jairam’s neighbour said that on Sunday night she was watching television when the community experienced ‘low voltage’.
She added that she heard an explosion and, upon looking outside, she saw that Jairam’s house was on fire. The explosion was caused by an exploding gas cylinder.
The family had not been living at the house for the past week, since Kumarie’s mother is sick and hospitalized. She and her family have been staying with her father since last week Sunday.
The woman said that the last time she cooked anything there was the same day she left to go over to her parents’ home.
When the fire occurred, Kumarie was at the hospital tending to her mother. She said that she received a call that her house was on fire.
By the time she arrived at the scene, the house was completely burnt and nothing was saved.
However, the family yesterday retrieved some jewellery from the debris. The family has been living in the house for the past two years now.
Kumarie is positive that she did not leave any electrical appliance on in the house, since she hadn’t visited there for a week.
She said that there was no one who would want to burn her house down, as she contended that she does not have a problem with anyone from the community.
