Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony took time off his busy schedule to meet the visiting Trinidad and Tobago schoolgirls Windball Cricket Team along with officials as well as present members of the Guyana squad with jerseys ahead of their five-match series which starts today, at the National Park.
The Meeting which took place in the Minister’s Office was also attended by members of the Al Sport & Tour Promotions Group who are responsible for organising the visit, the second in as many years with Guyana winning the inaugural series 5-0 last year right here.
Dr. Anthony speaking with the teams said that he was very happy to see so many young girls involved in the sport since not many women participate in sports.
He urged them to encourage other girls to get involved, adding that nothing beats physical exercise and that is one of the benefits of playing the game.
“It also allows you to meet new friends, but that new friendship should not take away from your competitive spirit,” Dr. Anthony advised.
The Minister told the Guyana contingent to play and ensure that they successfully defend their title, before wishing them the best of luck and hope that they do Guyana proud. The five matches are scheduled to be played at different venues.
The Guyanese team includes two players under the age of 10 years and will be captained by the experienced Kattie Ann Punch, while the Trinidadian vice-captain Chantel Emanuel is also a very skilled player.
A keen and interesting series is in the making and spectators are invited to come out and witness the matches.
Today’s game starts at 11:00 hrs and it is expected that Director of Sport Neil Kumar will deliver the feature address at the opening just before play commences.
