The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 15:30 hours on Sunday at the Linden/Soesdyke Highway Junction. The accident resulted in the death of pedal cyclist Tyrone Singh, 42, of Soesdyke.
According to the police in a press release, investigations revealed that the driver of minibus BGG 8879 was proceeding north along the western carriageway when it is alleged that Tyrone Singh, who was cycling along the roadway, suddenly swerved into the path of the minibus as it was about to pass him.
He was struck down and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the vehicle is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
But, according to an eyewitness, Singh appeared to be heavily under the influence of alcohol, and was seen swerving all over the road prior to being hit by the 32-seater bus.
The eyewitness told this newspaper that a small bottle with alcohol was removed from Singh’s pocket shortly after the accident.
