John Emanuel Nestor M.S. a renowned public relations practitioner and sports administrator ‘left us’.
He died on Friday, July 18th, a mere eleven days before his 94th birthday.
Uncle John as he was known to and by all was born in the ancient county of Berbice.
A fervid athlete he was, and represented his country (Guyana) at football and volleyball.
He also participated in many other sports disciplines including billiards, bridge, Lawn Tennis, Track and Field and cricket during his earlier years.
Uncle John did not only had the qualities of a good player, but his interest in sports and its development motivated him to also be involved with sports administration.
Because of his commitment and dedication, he served with excellence at the highest levels in various organisations – President of the Guyana Volleyball Association, President of the Guyana Billiards Association, President of the New Amsterdam Volleyball, Table Tennis and Football Associations, President of the Pacesetters Basketball Club and Patron of the Dorado Swimming Club.
As the Public Relations Officer for Banks DIH Limited, Uncle John was able to influence the Company to sponsor numerous sports personalities and competitions.
Because of his honesty, interest, respect and discipline, Banks DIH accepted his requests and became meaningfully involved in the sponsorship of sports.
John Nestor, during his years as an athlete and sports administrator assumed the role as Father Figure to many persons who came into contact with him.
He was awarded the Medal of Service (MS) in 1996 for his invaluable contribution to sports at the National and Regional levels.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission wishes to extend condolences to his immediate and extended families, their relatives and friends, colleagues and also to the sports fraternity.
May his soul rest in peace.
