NEW AMSTERDAM , BERBICE – The People’s Progressive Party regional committees in Berbice are adding the final touches for the 29th Triennial Congress of the party, slated for August 2 and 3 at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, who is also the Berbice party supervisor, has indicated that over 356 delegates and observers will be representing the ancient county at the congress.
These would be drawn from over 75 party groups spanning sections of Regions Five and Six, including Orealla and Siparuta.
According to him, there are three party regional committees in Berbice. “Our party members look forward to this occasion, where we will meet other members across the country and renew old relations.
“We also have a chance to discuss with other party members issues on how we could better serve the party. Congress also provides the membership with an opportunity to interact with each other; and with the leadership of the party, which includes the General Secretary, the President and other senior members within the party.”
The Berbice groups have nominated more than 15 people for the People’s Progressive Party Central Executive. “Although we nominated people within the region, we have also nominated persons outside of the region — across Guyana — who will be running as candidates.”
Mr. Mustapha said that since the last congress in 2005, there has been an increase in membership. “The last congress we took just about 290 persons, and this one we are taking over 356. These new members are of different age groups. Delegates are being elected based on the group strength – for every three financial members one delegate is selected.”
One major highlight of the congress is the Report of the Central Committee. This is to be presented by the party’s General Secretary, Donald Ramotar. “It is this report that sets the tone and forms the basis for discussion at both the Plenary Session and at the workshop, even though delegates are free to raise any issue that is of interest and concern to them.”
The theme selected this year is ‘Strengthening the Party, Defend the Nation and Accelerate Development.’
