The Alliance For Change has expressed outrage at the recent violent spate of robberies around the country.
The party specifically noted the shooting to death of Akbar Ali of Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
The AFC believes that, despite all the security measures that the East Coast has, which include the gift of vehicles, the constant aerial surveillance by helicopters, and the high level of training sessions of the SWAT units, the business community and ordinary citizens are still vulnerable to criminal elements.
The political party demands that a more serious approach be taken to protect citizens who travel to the city to conduct business.
“The time has come for the members of the police force to come out from behind their barricades and confront the criminals on the streets and their hiding places.”
“If the police society remains safely in their cocoon within their fortified walls and sunset street closures, what kind of fate is the general public put into?” the AFC questioned in a release.
It added that unless the police force acts now to serve and protect, a new form of vigilantism would emerge.
The AFC extends condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues of Akbar Alli, while reminding the Government that a country’s most potent resource is its people, and that the Guyanese public cannot live in fear of the criminal elements.
The party reiterates that the police need to step up a notch when dealing with the crime situation in Guyana.
