The mother of the late footballer Neil Hernandez, who was suspected to have committed suicide by setting the house that he lived in on fire, is claiming that her son did not kill himself.
The woman, Ena Hernandez, told Kaieteur News that when her son’s remains were removed from the gutted house at Lot 219 Four Mile Housing Scheme, Bartica last December, his right arm, from the elbow down, was missing, along with both his feet from the knee down.
She believes that this clearly indicates that her son was killed and then the house was set on fire.
Hernandez noted that the position that her son’s body was found in also shows that he was tied up. She is of the opinion that her son was tortured, since his teeth were also missing.
Reports had indicated that the national footballer had once shared a common law relationship with his girlfriend, Odessa Lynch, for almost a year.
They reportedly went their separate ways about a month before the incident took place.
On the day of the incident, the woman said, persons in the community told her that they saw Hernandez at the Bartica Police Station. According to the distraught mother, her son was making a report to the police that his then ex-girlfriend had his passport in her possession and refused to return it.
She said that persons in the area had also stated that Hernandez was last seen in the company of Lynch and another individual, as they made their way to the house where the man was burnt to death. She added that neighbours recalled hearing Hernandez screaming in the house, but didn’t take it seriously.
Ena is strongly of the view that although new information has surfaced about the incident, the police have not made any arrests, as they are still treating the matter as a suicide.
She is urging the police in Georgetown to take over the investigation into the matter, since she has lost faith in the competence of the police in Bartica.
The man’s girlfriend, Lynch, had stated that Hernandez was abusive and threatened to kill her on a number of occasions. It is because of this, she said, that she ended the relationship.
