Three persons were left homeless last evening when a fire of unknown origin gutted a two-storey wooden house at Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.
Those homeless are Kumarie Jairam, her husband Rammnarace Sajram, and their three-year-old son Govin Sajram.
According to reports, flames engulfed the Lot 1583 Tuschen Housing Scheme house at about 19:30 hrs yesterday.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Jairam said that she had been living at the house for the past two years.
She said that over the past week she and her family moved in at her parent’s home, which is in another section of the same village, since her mother is hospitalized.
Last evening, when she returned from the hospital, she was told that her house was on fire, but by the time she arrived the building was completely burnt.
Jairam, who could not have estimated her losses, said that she is not sure what might have started the fire, since no electrical appliances were plugged in at the house.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene last evening, personnel from the Guyana Power and Light co. had already disconnected the electricity in the area.
Jairam’s brother, Ghanchan Ghansam Hardeo, told this newspaper that he was a few houses away when he saw smoke coming from his sister’s house.
He said that by the time he attempted to enter the house, it was already overwhelmed with smoke.
Hardeo said he called the fire service, but despite their efforts, the entire building was burnt.
An investigation has since been launched.
