As police on the West Coast of Demerara continue investigations into at least two robberies, they have detained a man who they believe might have been responsible for the criminal acts.
Last Friday night, at around 20:00 hours, the suspect was nabbed with a toy gun and mask in a plastic bag when the police stopped a vehicle at a roadblock.
The man, who was a passenger in a route 32 minibus, was stopped at the roadblock which was set up in front of the Leonora Police Station. During the mass operation, the man was searched and the items found.
Sources close to the investigation say that the man who is in custody is to be placed on an identification parade.
The source added that based on information received, the man, who claims to live in Georgetown, might have been responsible for at least two robberies that were recently committed in the area.
About two weeks ago, the owner of a barbershop at Uitvlugt was attacked and robbed by a lone gunman. At the time, the shopkeeper was about to close up his establishment when the gun-toting man pounced on and relieved the businessman of a quantity of cash and other valuables.
A few days after that incident, a man from De Kenderen was also attacked and robbed by a lone gunman. That victim was also relieved of jewellery, an undisclosed amount of cash, and his cellular phone.
