Parika defeated Hogg Island by 24 runs in the final of the Western Hogg Island Community sponsored 6 overs softball cricket competition as the Essequibo Island observed its first ever island day on July 13th.
Parika won the toss and elected to take first strike watched by a large and colourful crowd, which included former chairman of Region #3 Mr. Esan Dookie, and never recovered after a bad start and were eventually bowled out for 69 in 5.5 overs.
Former Essequibo under-19 player Dhaniram Lallaram top scored with 22 and Kenworth Smith supported with 18 as the Hogg Island bowlers maintained a steady line and length.
Asgar Aslam was the pick of the home team bowlers with 2 – 18 off 2 overs.
In reply, Hogg Island, urged on by their supporters appeared to be cruising to victory at one stage on 22 for one. There after, the rain came and the home team found runs difficult to come by as the moisture on the pitch made stroke play difficult.
Hogg Island eventually ended on 45 for 6 when their 6 overs expired. Mark Pearce and Gibran Mohamed claimed 2 wickets each for Parika who carted off the winning trophy and one Ram sheep while Hogg Island took the runner’s – up prize and the most disciplined team award.
At the presentation ceremony Mr. Dookie who hails from Hogg Island congratulated Parika for winning the competition and wished the other teams the best of luck next time around. He also said that the Hogg Island Day will become an annual event and it will be better and bigger next year.
The captains of the other teams which came from neighbouring islands that took part in the competition thanked the organisers for inviting them over to participate in the competition. The other teams were, All Star’s, Allenkey Island, Caria Caria, Young Warriors, of Wakenaam and Hogg Island B. team.
