Guyana’s seven member boxing team to the Junior Caribbean Amateur Boxing Championships in Trinidad and Tobago turned in an excellent performance with every member securing a medal including five golds.
Mandessa Moses became the first Guyanese female amateur fighter to secure a gold medal for her country when she defeated Leeann Boodram of Trinidad in their bout. The others claiming gold medals are: Cleveland Rock who beat Sherwin Dillon of T&T, Herlando Allicock overcame Anthony Duadreen of T&T, Stefan Gouveia, who turned back the challenge of Matthew Speedwell and Moochan Sankar, who defeated Jesse Beckles.
Rondell Douglas (Guy) had to settle for silver after losing to Cobia Bradde (Bar) and Akeem Alexander (Guy) took bronze after he lost to Dillon Gilbert.
National Coach Carl Franklin and his assistant Terrence Poole prepared and travelled with the team to Trinidad.
The entire executive of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association came in for praise from its President Affeeze Khan for the hard work in seeing the sport improve locally. The successful boxers, who travelled to Trinidad, came in for much praise. They are due home today.
Khan also had a big thank you for the many sponsors who have come on board to assist the sport, but more so those who have assisted in ensuring the seven boxers compete at the regional event.
Among them that came in for mention are: Amanda St Aubyn of Scotia Bank, Paul Chan-a-Sue of Ansa McAl, Frank DeAbreu of DeSinco Trading, Dr Jose Da Silva of Modern Optical, K. Juman Yassin the Guyana Olympic Association president, Carlton De Four of Caribbean Airlines, Commandore Gary Best and the Guyana Defence Force, Manoram Mookaram CEO of M&M for providing boxing boots for Stefan Gouveia, Bertie Sukhai CEO of Namilco and Feroze Khan for also providing boxing boots for Allicock and Sankar.
