Reigning Group 4 champion Andrew King sent an ominous warning to his rivals after registering a blistering 35.4 seconds to grab pole for today’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meeting, at the South Dakota Circuit.
King relegated Andrew Morgan into second place on the grid after he clocked 35.6 seconds, while former champion Mark Vieira recorded a disappointing 37.4 seconds to finish a full two hundredths of a second off the pace of King.
Rounding out the group was Kevin Jeffrey, who clocked 38.1 seconds, Canada-based Shawn King with 38.8 and Irfaan Kalamadeen 40.6 completed the field.
Meanwhile, Group 3 and overall leader in the points standing Ryan Rahaman is still favoured to dominate that division, but with the likes of Trinidadian Tanko Baboolall, Kamal Seebarran, Keith Evelyn and Gavin Narine in the fray, he will have to be at his lethal best to stave off some serious challenges from those drivers.
Rahaman has a brand new Ford Sierra Cosworth which will need some adjusting to and it might be the right time for them to slip in and create some damage to his lead, knowing fully well that it is probably their best chance of doing so.
With Rahaman signalling that he might not contest the Group 2B category, it therefore sets up a fascinating duel between the likes of Ernesto Choo, Rupie Shewjattan, Shiraz Roshandin, Syed Hassan, Chet Singh and Raymond Alli, while the motor bikes should once again be dominated by (Big Bikes) Stephen Vieira, Gregory Lopes, Mark Menzes and Andy Rajkarran and the (125cc) will be led by Christopher McLean along with S. Vieira, Charlie Henry and Vassie Barry.
The Go-Karts as always is a toss up between the Jeffrey cousins Stephan and Kristian, but recently Shane Ally and Jerry Max Gouveia have been producing some sterling performances and should not be counted out.
