If what transpired on the opening night of second round rivalry in the 2008 Cellink Plus Premier League is an indication of what is to come, then fans are in for real exhilarating action.
And while many were perhaps of the view that the constant inclement weather were taking a toll on team preparations, they have to rethink that view since it has turned out to be the opposite.
Sounding warning bells were the Bourda Blues, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) who proved that their first-round showing was no fluke as they humbled Fruta Conquerors 1-0 to jump to the 3rd position in the standings while the losers dropped one place down to 5th.
The opening game of the round proved to be a thrilling battle between the leaders Sunburst Camptown and Santos who remains in the penultimate position but has certainly warmed the hearts of their supporters by holding the leaders to a 2-2 draw.
But it was the performance of the young GFC side that stole the show in heavy conditions which did not deter the teams from going after each other.
The home team Conquerors with maximum support were looking to further their place in the standings but were halted forthwith. GFC looked solid and composed in executing their plan which saw them attacking the opposition on many occasions but were not able to bury their shots. Conquerors on the other hand still looked a bit ring rusty and were guilty of shooting wide of the mark too often.
Goals proved a rarity in this match up but GFC’s Gregory Denny capitalised on a rare moment to blast a well placed right foot shot from the left side at the top of the box.
The ball eluded the diving Oswald Cornette and ended at the back of the nets in the 46th minute, which proved to be the knock-out blow.
The second half failed to produce any dazzling play as GFC were content to defend their slim advantage which earned them full points and their highest ever place in the standings to date.
The opening match was also a hard fought battle between the resurgent Santos and the table toppers.
Despite lots of rain, it was dry season for goals for the most part of the match but when it started to come it did so in quick fashion.
Santos went ahead in the match up after 76 minutes of tough battle compliments of a Clint Camacho goal. But this only proved to be a wake up call for Camptown who responded almost immediately through Lance Rolston with the first of his double, two minutes after.
Rolston was again on target as Camptown took the lead in the 82nd minute only to see Santos level the score with a well taken shot from outside. The ball sailed into the back of the net over the hands of goalkeeper Richie Richards.
Despite the result, Camptown remain at the top of the table with 18 points and Santos moved one up to 4 and still ahead of the bottom placed Uprising.
Another double header is set for this evening at the same venue. Guyana Defence Force, 2nd in the standings, will match skills with Uprising in the curtain raiser.
The main attraction brings together defending champions Alpha United and Pele in what is expected to be a keen contest.
