Yesterday the Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) continued to press people to change the manner in which they dispose of waste.
Addressing a press conference at the National Library yesterday, Hubert Archer, who is an ECHO volunteer, said that we need to reverse our trends in society. Mr. Archer said that preventing waste is a potent way of preventing Green House Gases.
The forum focused on Climate Change and Waste Management. This press briefing was held under the theme “Towards Good Environment and Stewardship”.
Among the resource personnel were persons involved in the field of Waste Management and Climate Change.
The forum came at a time when many developing countries are now trying to reverse the effects of the greenhouse gases.
Archer recommended that individuals should bury their waste in backyards and that persons in the mining industry should replant trees.
Mr. Hubert Urlin, Director of Solid Waste Management at the Mayor and City Council, said that waste management dates back as far as the 1900s with donkey carts being the main way of removing garbage. And it was in the 1950s that the British built an incinerator which would operate on a 24-hour basis, but as the city grew it proved to be insufficient for the amount of waste that was being generated. That same waste that was generated was also used to build roads.
And it was in the 1960s that a fleet of trucks was introduced. He said that waste management is controlled by the Mayor and City Council; the service is provided through the Public Health Department. Service is also provided by three contract companies through a $300 million budget which he said may go up by another $ 130 million.
Dr. Patrick Chesney, who is the project manager for Guyana Shield International Project, United Nations Development Plan (UNDP), said that human activities aid in the production of the greenhouse gases. He said that there is currently an action plan aimed at preventing the emission of greenhouse gases.
The UNDP representative said that better waste management can reduce the emission of the greenhouse gases, and that people and companies should try to convert waste materials into value added resources.
