Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Commodore Gary Best, and the Military Attaché of the Republic of Brazil, Colonel Eudes Carvalho dos Santos, were on Thursday presented with the Medal Star of Carabobo, by the Venezuelan military to mark the occasion of the birth anniversary of liberator Simon Bolivar.
The two military officers were presented with the awards on behalf of the Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuelan to Guyana, Mr. Dario Morandy Figuera, and the Military Attaché of Venezuela in Guyana, Brigadier General Roberto de Luca Varesano.
The event was a brief ceremony at the Venezuelan Institute on New Garden Street, which was also attended by the Venezuelan and Brazilian Ambassadors as well a representative of the Cuban Government.
Brigadier General Varesano outlined the history behind the efforts of Simon Bolivar to secure the independence of Venezuela and the final decisive battle in 1823 which brought an end to the Spanish domination of the territory.
He described Commodore Best as a distinguished gentleman who has demonstrated the capacity to face and to solve problems as well as maintaining the bilateral relations in the military environment between Guyana and Venezuela.
General Varesano added that Colonel dos Santos of the Brazilian army has shown desire to unite and maintain better bonds with Venezuela.
He expressed the hope that the 13 countries of South America become closer so that the dream of the great liberator Simon Bolivar can be realized.
Ambassador Dario Morandy Figuera said through an interpreter that the presentation of the Medal Star of Carabobo to military officers of two of Venezuela’s brother nations is a testimony of the need to integrate South America.
“Guyana and Brazil are members of the south union and together with Venezuela we are working for the strengthening of the South Security Council,” he said.
The two recipients were recognised for the work they have done for the union of South America.
