A United States of America citizen who was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, on Wednesday last with cocaine has been remanded to prison.
Amirah Yamien Mitchell, 21, made her appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on Wednesday July 24 at the airport she had in her possession 1.35 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. To the charge she pleaded not guilty.
Mitchell was represented by defence counsel Mark Waldron who asked that the matter be adjourned and be called before the substantial magistrate.
According to the prosecution, Mitchell, who is a cosmetologist, entered Guyana on Thursday July 17 aboard a Liat flight from Barbados.
On Wednesday July 23, at about 4:50 hours, Mitchell was an outgoing passenger on Caribbean Airlines flight BW 484 to New York via Trinidad, when her two suitcases were checked and the prohibited substances discovered.
Mitchell was remanded and is expected to make her next court appearance on Monday July 28 at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
