Competitors in the sport of motor racing seem to be on a mission and that is to leave no stone unturned in their quest to place the discipline atop the national sports programme.
Ever since his ascendancy to the top executive position of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club, President Vishok Persaud has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to propel the sport back to the lofty status it once enjoyed during the 70’s and a brief period in the 80’s when this country was regarded as the Mecca for the sport in the Caribbean.
This view is reinforced by the high level of preparation currently being witnessed among competitors who’re pulling out all the stops to get their machines fully equipped to thrill the ever growing band of supporters who’ve rejoined the sport over the past 3-4 years after a period where the decline in economic activity took its toll which created a sharp downturn in support for the sport.
Because of this overwhelming support, participants have begun to treat the fans with much more respect and are therefore spending lots of money to prepare their machines to a level that would allow them to entertain spectators who journey to the South Dakota Circuit for an anticipated thrilling day of intense rivalry.
In almost all the categories, choosing a rider or a driver who you think will dominate is proving to be more difficult these days than any other time in the history of the sport here.
The buzz and excitement could be felt long before race day and locals could often be heard in intense debate about the chances of their favourite competitor (s) and those discussions intensify as the Meeting draws closer.
From all reports, this Sunday’s ‘Race of Champions’ meeting, though not to be compared with the November International event has the ingredients to draw a massive crowd, especially with the emphasis being placed in the marquee Group 4 category, a division all drivers hope to graduate to.
Fans are therefore urged to come out in their numbers for an anticipated day of thrilling excitement.
