Guyana’s leading female football referee, Dianne Ferreira-James will be off to Beijing, China on Monday for officiating duty at the Olympic Games next month.
This is despite several referees including Ferreira-James suffering blackouts during the recently held Fitness Test in Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking to the lead football official, she disclosed that nine of the 15 officials suffered various forms of reactions to the humid conditions and failed the test.
Ferreira-James disclosed that they had a very unusual scenario on Tuesday July 15 during the Test which saw many persons falling and could not complete the test due to various reasons.
She was one of the unfortunate ones that blacked out for 20 seconds in the 8th lap, which she noted was very strange.
“All my years in athletics or otherwise never failed a Fitness Test and in Football run the men’s timings,” she opined FIFA decided after many meetings that it should be re run since nine failures from 15 was very surprising.
The doctor’s report showed that the humidity was above 89 which was the reason for the many persons failing (when this happen your body stops producing sweat to cool you down and causes shortage of breath or blackout).
Following the repeat of the Test, of the 15 persons appointed, 12 passed. Ferreira-James disclosed, “It was an easy stroll for me…running the Test as my preparation was enough.”
She indicated that in China, its one game at a time and she will try her best to remain healthy and focused on the task ahead.
She is expected to return home shortly from the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Tournament presently being played in Trinidad. The four teams to the semi-finals which were played yesterday are USA, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica.
