Dear Editor,
Rainforest Tours and Air Services Limited have done it again! How refreshing it was to have learnt of the reintroduction of the special package to the majestic Kaieteur Falls in Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni)!
I urge you, Mr. Editor, and everyone out there to take advantage of this special offer. It will be worth all the while. My father and I visited the Kaieteur Falls last December; and the flight, the scenery, the trek through the Guyana jungle, drinking the water from the Falls, taking pictures, the cool and crisp air of the interior and, most of all, the Falls itself, were nothing short of breathtaking and out of this world!
It’s high time that Guyanese take themselves to this crown jewel of the Caribbean and undoubtedly the world and make memories that will last them several lifetimes.
Our flight departed the Ogle Airport later than scheduled the last time, but the visit was worth the long wait.
The Kaieteur Falls is labelled the 26th most scenic waterfall in the world — five times higher than Canada’s Niagara and twice as high as Africa’s Victoria Falls. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.
To those visiting the Falls, make sure you soak up the scenic view of the glorious Potaro Plateau, which leads to the Pakaraima Mountains dominating the backdrop around the Falls area.
How lovely the mountains look draped in foliage like a thick blanket cover. The vapour and mist dances through the atmosphere all around the Falls, making the Falls invisible at times. Make sure you take advantage of the many photo opportunities that will be at your disposal — from looking at the interior from high above, to soaring past the Falls from inside the airplane, to trekking through the tropical rainforest; and, oh yes, being in the presence of the Kaieteur Falls itself.
While there, you will be taken to three vantage points or view – points from which you can see the Falls.
The final view is the best of them all. You will be standing right on top of the Falls as it were, just at the tip where the water flows down to the Kaieteur gorge. It is very tempting, but take caution when in this area.
Do not go too far out on the edge of the cliff, lest you fall to your death. Take a sip of the flowing, cool, satisfying water from the Potaro River which flows to the Falls. Fill containers with the water to take back on the Coast as souvenirs.
On your way to the first vantage viewing area, if you’re lucky, you will get a quick glimpse of the Golden Dart -Poison frog. One touch of this creature and one can end up dying from the frog’s toxic secretions which will enter your bloodstream.
The dart-poison frogs secrete alkaloid poisons, which are complex and bitter-tasting. Alkaloid poisons, which include caffeine, nicotine, cannabidiol, cocaine, and morphine, are some of the most familiar and addictive drugs known to man.
Take up the offer. It will be worth your time and money. Spend a day with yourself, Mother Nature and the majestic Kaieteur Falls — and lots of fun, adventure and loads of memories.
