Several other ranks have been disciplined internally for the escape of multiple-murder accused Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles from the Sparendaam Police Station.
Kaieteur News understands that at least three other ranks have been transferred from the station following the earlier removal of the station sergeant to Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
According to a source, one constable who was on duty at the station at the time of the escape has been sent to an interior location, while a rank who was an escort on the prison van that transported Charles to court has been relocated to the Special Constabulary Headquarters.
Another Tactical Services Unit rank, who was part of the escort party, has also been sent to another location.
The Force has not yet moved against the officer in charge of the station at the time of the escape.
The moves come weeks after the Police Office of Professional Responsibility concluded its report on the matter.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the investigating team found no evidence of collusion to facilitate the prisoner’s escape on the part of the ranks on duty.
However, Acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene told the media last week that the file on the matter has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
On June 25 last, at about 14:00 hours, Charles, who was among 33 prisoners who were escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station, escaped by squeezing through a hole in the lock-ups, where he was being held prior to being returned to the Camp Street Prison.
At a press conference held shortly after the escape, the Acting Police Commissioner said it would appear that the prisoners were left unsupervised and no one visited the lock-ups.
He said that during the time two wooden boards between the lock-ups’ door and the concrete floor of the cell were lifted and Charles used the opening to escape.
Investigations have revealed that the board in the lock-ups had been loose for about a month prior to the escape, and this was reported to the station sergeant, who took no action to remedy the situation, Greene said.
Since the escape, several persons have been questioned, including a Plaisance taxi service operator, who was held for a few days.
There have also been reported sightings of the fugitive, including one in which the security forces were reportedly engaged in a shootout at the back of North Ruimveldt and Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
A $2M reward has been put out for information leading to Charles’s arrest.
