Police on the East Bank of Demerara are investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy at Craig East Bank Demerara. Reports are that Christopher Mc Lean reportedly went playing with other youths from his village at the sea dam at Craig when he reportedly fell into the Demerara River.
Up to press time his body was still not recovered.
According to the lad’s grandmother, Gwendolyn Mc Lean, she last saw her grandson at around midday yesterday.
“All de time he went playing in de yard. Then he come to me and ask fuh $20, and I tell he I ain’t got, and he just left like normal fuh go play with he friends,” the woman recalled.
She said that about an hour later she received the news that her grandson had fallen into the Demerara River, and that his body was not recovered.
She said her grandson’s clothing were found on the sea dam, and persons who witnessed the incident said the water was too deep for anyone to venture in to save him.
Residents in the area gathered at the woman’s home after word of the incident got around, and there were conflicting reports about what transpired at the sea dam.
One resident said that the lad was pushed into the river by another youth from the area.
“He had a story with de boy who push he in, and we does tell he keep away from dem boy because dem ain’t good company, but he does still lime with them,” one resident said.
A report was made at the Grove Police Station, and a youth from the area has since been detained and is assisting with investigations.
