Banks DIH Limited, the Licensed Bottler and Distributor of Coca Cola in Guyana, will be teaming up with the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to bring a touch of the XXIX Summer Olympiad to Guyana with a Coca Cola Olympic Caravan on Saturday July 26.
The Coca Cola Caravan will take the form of a Torch Relay from the Guyana National Stadium at Providence to Main Street Quik Serv and will feature athletes from sixteen affiliates of the GOA bearing the Torch along a designated route.
Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters disclosed at a briefing yesterday at the company’s Conference Room, that the activity will start at 09:30am with the first Torch bearers being the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), and will end with this country’s lone home-based Olympic representative Niall Roberts leading a team from the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association.
In 1980, Amateur Boxing Michael Parris won a Bronze medal – Guyana’s only Olympic medal to date at the Games in Moscow.
The other competing bodies are the Athletic Association of Guyana, Guyana Hockey Board, Guyana National Rifle Association, Guyana Judo Association, Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association, Guyana Volleyball Federation, Guyana Canoe Federation, Guyana Cycling Federation, Guyana Lawn Tennis Association, Guyana Football Federation, Guyana Table Tennis Association, Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation and the Guyana Taekwando Association.
Banks DIH Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao disclosed that Coca Cola is a major sponsor of the Summer Olympic Games to be held from August 8-24 in Beijing, China and Coca Cola in Guyana will be part of the worldwide promotion of the Games.
“This activity is aimed at building awareness of the impending start of the 29th Olympiad, the Guyanese Olympians as well as its longest serving corporate sponsor, the Coca Cola Company,” he added.
“We are proud of our association with the Olympic Games and of our support for the 2008 Beijing Games. This support is extended to the Guyana Olympic Association and the Olympians, represented here today by Niall Roberts,” said Joao.
President of the GOA K.A. Juman-Yassin in offering his organisation’s support to the venture complimented Banks DIH for organising the Olympic Caravan.
Juman-Yassin said he hopes the athletes do their best at the Olympic Games and noted that the Olympics is not all about winning but also the camaraderie among athletes.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony has also offered his blessings and is expected to be one of the main speakers at the end of the Relay with the others being GOA President Juman-Yassin and a representative from Coca Cola.
There will also be a short cultural presentation featuring Dragon Dancing by the local Chinese Community.
Coca Cola novelties will be presented to spectators along the route.
Also present at the Launch was National swimmer Niall Roberts, the lone Guyana-based athlete destine for the Games.
The route will start at National Stadium at Providence, north along the East Bank Highway to Houston bypass, east into Mandela Avenue, north into Sheriff Street, west into Campbell Avenue, south along Vlissengen Road, west into Regent Street, north into Albert Street, west into North Road, north into Avenue of the Republic, into Main Street to Main Street Quik Serv.
The XXIX Summer Olympic Games will take place in Beijing from August 8-24 and Guyana will be represented in a few of the disciplines including athletics.
