Relatives of 21-year-old Maxwell Parris, of D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, are hoping for the best as he remains hospitalised following a confrontation with the police.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at around 2:00 hours yesterday after police responded to a report that two men were seen on the roof of the Gafoors Building on Lombard Street.
The report stated that after police arrived on the scene, they were fired upon by one of the two men who were on the building, and were forced to return fire. Parris sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach and left arm in the exchange. The other man was arrested and taken into police custody.
However, according to a police source, no weapon was recovered.
Parris was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was treated and subsequently admitted. His condition, up to press time yesterday, was listed as critical, as he remains a patient at the GPHC’s Intensive Care Unit.
When contacted, a relative of the injured man, who asked not to be identified, said they have not yet been formally informed as to what really transpired.
The relatives said they were told that Parris was seen in the building by persons, and shot and beaten by police ranks.
“We really don’t know what happened. All I can say is you make children but you don’t make their minds…We are surprised at the incident,” the relative said.
In the meantime, charges are likely to be laid against the other man who is in custody.
