Pre-Carifesta event set for July 27
The sport of Race Walking is growing gradually in popularity in Guyana both as a leisure pursuit and competitively.
The sport which has improved significantly over the past years is getting brighter and with every race staged the sport is growing in participation as well as following.
The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club, of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, Guyana, the main promoters of Race Walking has in recent years made every effort to promote its popularity by staging numerous races countrywide and continues to do the same.
During last year and up to now, new talent particularly among women and juniors has been unearthed and Rudolph Mitchell, the king of Race-Walking locally, captured his 76th local consecutive title.
As a means of stimulating the growth of Race Walking, the club has embarked on a massive development and expansion programme which will include a number of races in all regions of the country, participation in a number of overseas events and the holding of training sessions and workshops in order to push the sport forward.
The formation of Race Walk clubs in the regions, as well as in Government Ministries and agencies, business entities, churches, N.G.O’S and other groups as well including schools and other educational institutions will also be undertaken.
Guyana has also begun -to attract the kind of international attention with lots of interest being shown by a number of Race Walk clubs and associations in the U.S.A., U.K., Canada and the Caribbean with the aim of assisting to lift the sport to international standards.
The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club has staged three successful Race Walk months of activities commencing in 2005 and this year during August, will stage its 4th Race Walk month of activities under the theme ‘Protecting and Building Guyana through Sports’.
The month’s events are expected to attract massive overseas participation and will be held countrywide.
Races, training sessions and workshops, exhibitions and outreach activities will be held during the month. The contributions of key sponsors and donors who have aided the sport over the years as well as outstanding performers will also be recognized at a special function to be held.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club will be staging a 20 lap Pre-Carifesta Race Walk around the National Park on Sunday July 27th commencing at 06.30 hrs.
Race Walkers from across the country will challenge National Race Walk Champion Rudolph Mitchell.
Trophies and other prizes will be at stake for Male and Female (seniors), juniors and Veterans.
Interested participants must be at the starting point at 06.00 hrs.
