NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Police in Berbice have stepped up their anti-crime fight. On Friday evening, within a 12-hour period, an exercise conducted nabbed 16 persons for various offences.
These included loitering, break and enter, simple larceny, and some for whom arrest warrants were issued.
They are all to appear in different courts throughout Berbice later today.
According to Assistant Commissioner Clinton Conway, who heads Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, 18 mobile patrols, eight foot patrols and six bicycle patrols were on beat at strategic locations in the division during the exercise.
This exercise involved 81 officers, inspectors, subordinate officers, neighbourhood police and other ranks.
He said there were 54 members of community policing groups who also were a part of it. “I am pleased with the turnout of the members of the community policing groups and neighbourhood police. This exercise will continue at intervals.”
These are part of the activities to mark the 169th year of existence of the Guyana Police Force.
Meanwhile, two new community policing groups were added to the list, taking to 66 the total number of active community policing groups between Abary, on the West Coast of Berbice, and Orealla/Siparuta, on the Corentyne River.
Up to December 2007, there were 40 community policing groups in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, with 525 members.
The addition takes to approximately 850 the number of community policing group members in East and West Berbice as at May 2008.
