A former army officer, who has previously been involved in criminal activity, has been detained by Police on the East Coast of Demerara after he and three other men tried to defraud a businessman of approximately $1.7M on Saturday.
The former officer, who was held on an arms and ammunition charge and who was dishonourably sent home from the prestigious Sandhurst Military College, was held by Police at about midday Saturday after the businessman, upon recognising that a Manager’s Cheque that he was presented with was bogus, called in the Police.
According to the businessman, Munsehwar Persaud, who operates a hardware store at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, the former officer and two other men came to his establishment and requested three slings of cement, which amounted to 1050 sacks.
They offered to pay for the cement with a Manager’s Cheque bearing the businessman’s name, for the cost of the items, $1.732M.
Persaud said that he recognized the cheque was bogus but did not tell the men of his suspicions.
He told this newspaper that the men even offered to take him to where the cement was to have been delivered, but he refused.
The men, apparently realizing that the businessman was suspicious of their act, decided to leave, telling him that they were going to make another purchase and would be back.
Persaud explained that, after the men left, he took a taxi and scoured the area and eventually saw the men sitting in a car not far from his establishment.
It was then he called in the Police patrol in the area, who, upon questioning the men, realized that they were fraudsters.
They were taken into custody.
But Persaud’s troubles did not end there.
He told this newspaper that since the men were arrested, he has received several threatening telephone calls.
According to Persaud, the callers threatened to harm him and his family if he does not facilitate the release of the men in custody.
The threats were also reported to the Police, who are investigating.
In June, Persaud was robbed in the city by gunmen, who relieved him of a substantial amount of cash and his licenced firearm.
