The 11th annual Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club/Sprite Cricket Academy bowled off last Monday at the Area ‘H’ ground after a colourful parade and March pass.
Delivering the charge to the players attending was Banks DIH Limited’s Berbice Branch Sales Manager Joshua Torrezao who urged the youngsters to aim high. “You have been given an opportunity to develop your Cricketing and personal skills by the RHTY&SC and Banks DIH and it is up to you to grasp the chance now to develop and become the next great West Indies player but remember hard work, discipline and commitment are the keys to success.”
Torrezao along with senior coaches of the Academy Kenrick Batson, Delbert Hicks and Winston Smith took the salute at the March pass.
Players between the ages of 8 and 17 are attending this activity which seeks to nurture their cricketing skills and at the same time train them to become sports ambassadors and role models for their peers.
Club Secretary and CEO, Hilbert Foster at the launching called on the participants to commit themselves to playing a major role in returning West Indies cricket to the top again.
Noting that one of the major challenges in the Region is that players are more interested in the financial aspect of the game. Foster called on the youths to develop a real love for the game and to make sure that they avoid drugs and other social ills.
He also expressed gratitude to Banks DIH and Sprite for partnering with them to bring off the Academy.
Torrezao stated that Banks DIH Ltd has always supported sports and was pleased to be associated with the development of new talent. He affirmed his company’s satisfaction with the administration in place to run the academy and the positive attitude of the coaches and players.
The players were exposed to batting techniques which included the usage of the Bowling Machine for the first time in Berbice during the first week of the Academy. Work was also done on catching, ground fielding, fast bowling and wicketkeeping.
Indoor work was done last week including lectures on personal manners, importance of discipline and sports code of conduct. Among the players attending are national under-15 batsman Dominic Rickey and Berbice under-15 players Lionel Lewis, Lloydel Lewis and Shawn Perreira.
