Police on the West Coast of Demerara are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body on the Schoon Ord Public Road, West Bank Demerara.
At around 9:00 hours yesterday, residents of the area summoned Police after they spotted the body, which was subsequently identified as that of 19-year-old Suresh Narine, called ‘Roti’.
According to a Police report, investigators are working on the theory that Narine was the victim of a hit-and-run accident. The source said that the victim’s bicycle was some 40 feet away. Narine’s body bore several marks consistent with a motor vehicle accident.
An elder brother of the dead man, Rakesh Narine, said that he received the news from a friend at around 8:30 hours.
“Sunita call and tell me that ‘Roti’ get knock down and that he dead, but me didn’t believe. Is not till me other brother and me went to de mortuary and me see me brother body that me believe,” the man said.
He said that his brother was employed as a porter with a DDL wholesale dealer at the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling.
He said he last saw his brother on Friday morning.
“I see he by de stelling and me tell the boy to go home. He does live with we in Crane, and sometimes he does deh by we other brother in La Grange.”
The relatives want the perpetrator to come forward.
“He dead already and we ain’t believe in putting whoever in jail; we need assistance for the burial and that is all we asking for,” one family member said.
A post mortem is expected to be performed on Narine’s remains on Monday, after which it will be handed over to the relatives for burial.
