A total of 545 persons were examined at the Leonora Primary School, West Coast Demerara, yesterday, as the Guyana Watch Inc (GWI) took its medical team to the community.
A number of referrals were made to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), due to the seriousness of the illness. Six of these referrals were heart-related cases.
Persons from as far as Parika, on the East Bank of Essequibo, visited the clinic to seek treatment for various ailments.
Most of the common cases that the doctors treated were diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
According to Dr. Joseph Tafur, who is part of the medical team, most of these cases are treatable and the patients are already on medication.
Other persons also visited the clinic to be treated for itching, belly aches, stomach pains, coughs, fever, and skin rashes, among others.
Some of the patients expressed their appreciation for the assistance of the doctors, as most of them noted that they were not receiving proper medical attention at the cottage hospitals and clinics in their communities.
Most of the visiting doctors contended that many of the patients they examined are not practicing healthy lifestyles. They do not eat the right types of food and are not doing regular health checkups.
The Guyana Watch Medical team is currently conducting its 16th annual outreach programme to Guyana.
In 2007, the team saw 3,025 patients and supplied more than US$275,000 in medication.
Tomorrow, the doctors are scheduled to take the clinic to the Aurora Government School, Essequibo Coast.
