It’s impressive in outlook, the only one of its kind, built right here in Guyana specifically for racing, that is the Third Generation Mazda RX7 turbo-charged 13B car to be driven by young Irfaan Kalamadeen at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club July 27 Meeting.
Scheduled to be staged at the South Dakota Circuit, Kalamadeen, who will compete in the highly competitive Group 4 category which has some of the fastest machines in local racing, disclosed in an interview with Kaieteur Sport that he is not intimidated by the fact that he is going up against the most experienced drivers on the circuit against who he expects to do well, referring to points leader Andrew King, Mark Vieira, Kevin Jeffrey and Andrew Morgan among others.
“They all have a lot more experience that me and together with the fact that this Meeting is the first time the car will be engaged in competitive racing, I really do not know what to expect, but I’m still hoping to do well,” Kalamadeen disclosed.
The relatively inexperienced driver who literally grew up on the track, having spent countless hours watching his father Farouk (now deceased) prepare his machine and then compete on the track many years ago has since graduated from drag racing and will make his first entry into track racing next weekend in what is anticipated to be the marquee category which accommodates all the ‘big boys’ of local racing.
Though not fully completed as yet, Kalamadeen informed that the finishing touches are being applied right now and he expects to get in some valuable track time by the weekend which should indicate how well the car will perform come race day.
“I really took my time to prepare this car, but you know with any thing new, you just have to go out there and test it and hope that it remains reliable and competitive,” he said. “I have to get on the track and test its performance.”
Kalamadeen, who is being sponsored by Jiffi Lubes, a business owned by the family that deals with sales and services of motor vehicles, responding to the question of the state of the sport here, revealed that it is definitely on the upswing with a lot of interest shown by competitors and fans. “It is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing sports in Guyana right now.”
