NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Region Six recently hosted a one-day workshop for the 51 volunteers for the upcoming Carifesta X at the Guyana Teachers’ Union in New Amsterdam.
The participants were selected from areas between East Bank Berbice and Corriverton, including Black Bush Polder.
Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, in addressing the participants during the closing ceremony, called on them to put their best foot forward since they are the ones directly interacting with the visitors.
Carifesta is not only about showcasing the country and the culture but there will be spin-off effects as well, particularly in terms of investment, he said.
Already the local committee has hosted a series of activities in East Berbice/Corentyne for Carifesta X.
The next is scheduled for Corriverton on August, in the form of a talent show featuring local artistes as well as those from outside Berbice.
Mr. Faizal Jaffarally, one of the organizers, said that the next major event, the Youth Village, visual arts and book exhibition, and a cultural explosion, would be hosted at the Albion Sports Complex.
At present the Carifesta X Environment Sub-Committee of Region Six is engaging in a clean-up campaign across Region Six. “We are sprucing up the communities – We began in New Amsterdam two weeks ago but we are not yet finished; there still is a lot to do. Then we will move to other areas.
“On all of the streets on the main thoroughfares we are going to place the nation’s flag. This should be completed by the first week in August. We are calling on all civic minded Guyanese, business and non-governmental entities to play a role in preserving the aesthesis of our Region.”
The Albion Sports Complex is to get a face lift for the events. “We are painting the main pavilion, the commentators’ booth and the internal fence around the field would be painted as well. Washroom facilities are to be upgraded as well as the main entrance.”
