Guyana’s Boys and Girls teams competing in the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Bermuda, booked places in the finals with victories in their respective semi-final matches yesterday.
The Guyana boys got past Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in the semis and will face host Bermuda in the final after they beat the OECS by a similar margin.
The girls had a much easier time dominating Jamaica 5-0 and will take on Bermuda after they edged past Trinidad 3-2.
Raphael DeGroot, Oliver Kear-Downs and Alexander Arjoon won for Guyana, while Abhishek Singh and Nyron Joseph lost. DeGroot brushed by Adrian Dyer 9-4, 9-0, 9-1, Kear-Downs started slowly but changed gear to beat Kevin Ross 5-9, 9-3, 9-0, 9-1 and Arjoon fought off Kale Wilson 9-5, 9-7, 6-9, 9-6. Singh went down 9-6, 10-8, 5-9, 2-9, 5-9 in a bruising encounter with Mandela Patrick, while Joseph was beaten by Nku Patrick 9-5, 9-3, 9-7.
For the girls, Daina King overcame her slow start to halt the challenge of Kristine Bell 1-9, 9-0, 9-4, 9-6, Kayla Jeffrey beat Lauren Mahfood 9-3, 9-3, 9-4, her sister Keisha stopped Brooke Burrowes 10-8, 9-0, 9-0, Mary Fung-a-Fat rolled over Jessica Perkins 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 and Victoria Arjoon defeated Mary Mahfood 9-0, 9-1, 9-1.
In other results; Cayman Islands beat Barbados 3-2 in the 5th-7th place boys playoff, while Barbados got past the OECS girls 4-1 in a similar playoff.
