With prize monies totalling close to $2million, this year’s Alpha United ‘Summer’ Knockout Football Festival which will coincide with Carifesta is expected to attract some 16 teams chosen from various sub-associations.
This was intimated to the media via a press briefing which was held by the club at the Water Chris Hotel on Waterloo Street yesterday.
The teams selected are: Alpha United, Mocha Champs, Berbice, Buxton, Santos, Uitvlugt, Fruta Conquerors, Silver Shattas, Camptown, GFC, Top XX, GDF, Pele, Western Tigers, BV and Pouderoyen.
According to President of the Club, Odinga Lumumba, the winning team will receive a first prize of $1million, 2nd place-$500,000, 3rd – $250,000 and 4th -$125,000, while prizes will also be awarded to outstanding individual performances.
Lumumba also stated that preliminary matches will be played at the GFC ground and the MSC in Linden, while the semi-finals are slated for the GCC ground and finals tentatively set for the Guyana National Stadium.
So far, Digicel, Courtney Benn Construction Company and the AIDS Secretariat are among the sponsors on board.
