An unlicensed driver has been remanded to prison after being slapped with five charges stemming from a July 8 accident at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, in which his niece was killed.
Richard Jhaman, 32, of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, breach of insurance, driving without a licence, failing to render assistance, and failing to report an accident within 24 hours.
He appeared before Magistrate Nigel Hack at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
The accused is scheduled to make his second court appearance on July 30.
It is alleged that Jhaman, who is unlicensed, was driving his brother’s Canter truck on the East Bank Demerara Public Road on July 8, when he crashed into the back of a parked sand truck.
Jhaman’s 11-year-old niece, Inaleema, was traveling in the vehicle and perished in the accident.
Her seven-year-old brother, Joshua, was also injured.
Police allege that Jhaman fled the scene without rendering assistance to the injured children.
He was arrested a few days later in a house at Soesdyke.
