IATA travel agents outraged by Minister’s comments
A group of International Air Transport Association (IATA) accredited travel agents yesterday expressed their anger and outrage at the comments by Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad at a press conference on Wednesday.
At the press conference, the Minister said that travel agents purchased seats earlier, when they were cheaper, and were presently reselling them at an increased price.
The agencies were angered by the Minister’s comments because, they said, it made them sound like ‘rouges and pirates’ who were trying to defraud the travelling public.
The Minister amended his statements after meeting with a team of IATA accredited travel agents, yesterday. The Minister said that the local IATA travel agents were not price gouging.
Captain Gerald Gouveia, who was with the travel agents, said on behalf of the travel agents who had come together that they were “comfortable with the Minister’s response to our concerns.” Gouveia went on to say that the meeting went very well and explained that the Minster was very cordial.
He added that travel agencies did not have the leeway to cheat the travelling public due to the measures which IATA had put in place.
He noted that the electronic reservation systems used by the IATA travel agencies did not allow any scope for adjusting or playing around with the prices of airline tickets.
“We are accredited IATA travel agents and we are governed by the international regulations of IATA,” explained Gouveia.
