On a day blessed with glorious sunshine, the maturity of 15-year-old West Indies under-15 opener Kraigg Braithwaite belied his age and his maiden regional under-19 three-day century for Barbados against Guyana yesterday at the BET ground inspired some hope for the future of West Indies cricket.
Although the Combermere School fourth form student stroked an accomplished 112 from 279 balls, 331 minutes with four fours, it was the manner in which the tall, correct right-hander responsibly compiled his 31st century that was most impressive.
Braithwaite, who scored two tons for the West Indies under-15 team earlier this year, worked the balls into the gaps and drove the over-pitched balls with authority as he played each ball on its merit on a flat track and heavy outfield as Barbados, resuming on 96-2 declared at 300-8 at 15:51hrs on the second day of the TCL Group third round match.
Off-spinner Herman Latcha, who removed Roston Chase in the day’s first over before he had added to his overnight 21, bowled a marathon spell of 42 overs in which he took 4-76 for the Guyanese who reached 35-2 by the close, needing another 266 runs for first innings points.
After Chase’s demise, Benn joined the level-headed Braithwaite and took the attack to the Guyana bowlers with an array of aggressive shots on the heavy outfield as he dominated the fourth wicket stand in sunny conditions.
Benn hammered Latcha to the mid wicket boundary and clobbered Totaram Bishun out of the ground in the next over while Braithwaite exhibited excellent composer as Barbados scored 42 in the first hour’s play.
Leg-spinner Jonathon Foo struck 30 minutes before lunch when Benn, who struck four fours and a six from 82 balls and 88 minutes in his 38, was caught behind to end the 65-run fourth wicket partnership and leave the host on 161-4.
Cummins (9) and Braithwaite, who reached his fifty from 131 balls, 174 minutes with four fours, saw their team to lunch at 183-4 with Braithwaite unbeaten on 74.
After lunch, Braithwaite neatly tucked Latcha to forward square-leg for a single after showing no signs of nerves in the nineties. His hundred took 260 balls, 299 minutes and included just four boundaries and his level-headedness and shot selection was a joy to behold.
Skipper Fredericks introduced his part-time off spin and broke the 77-run fifth partnership when he got rid of Cummins for a 99-ball 30 at 238-5 while Latcha, returned to take the prized scalp of Braithwaite, who demonstrated Chanderpaul-like temperament, just before tea with the home team on 254-6.
Watched by a small crowd which included former Guyana and West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd and veteran journalist Tony Cozier, Raymon Reifer (14) and Jason Holder (6) took their team to 267-6 by Tea.
After the break, Latcha removed Holder (9) while one run later Dario Vaughn (1) was run out as Barbados slipped to 275-8 on a day in which five umpiring decisions went against the defending champions from one end.
When the hosts reached the 300 mark they declared at 15:51hrs with Reifer unbeaten on 35 and Jeremy Marshall on nine, leaving Guyana to bat for an hour yesterday.
When Guyana began their reply, Fredericks cut Randall Hoyte audaciously to the point boundary to get his innings going in entertaining style while Griffith smashed Marshall down the ground for a scintillating boundary.
With the score on 33, Griffith (6) edged a ball which left him from Holder and was well taken by wicketkeeper Kyle Corbin while Fredericks (17) was brilliantly taken at short leg by Braithwaite in the next over as off-spinner Roston Chase struck to leave Guyana on 35-2.
Night watchman Latcha, the fourth left-hander in the order, joined Sookdeo to see Guyana to the close without further loss.
Today is the final day and Guyana will want to bat for as long as possible to preserve their six-point lead over the second placed Bajans coming into the third round.
