Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee yesterday met with executive members of the mining community to iron out why some recommendations coming out of joint meetings have not been implemented.
He noted that following the Lindo Creek slaughter of eight miners, the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) and Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) reported concerns of the security of miners and lamented on the poor quality of service provided by the Police.
According to Rohee, ever since February, Cabinet had taken the initiative to commence an engagement with the relevant stakeholders with a view to arriving at conclusions that would enhance the partnership between GGDMA, government and the police force.
He added that a draft of recommendations was formulated but some problems were encountered with respect to the implementation, hence yesterday’s meeting.
A review of the status of recommendations was also on the cards for the meeting, with an aim to identifying the stumbling blocks which were hampering the implementations of the measures and to chart a course forward.
Executive Director of GGMC, Edward Shields told this newspaper that prior to the start of the meeting, among the recommendations that they were aiming to pursue was the regularising of Brazilian miners in the mining regions, the many illegal shops and the issuance of firearm licences to miners.
Shields posited that the problem did not lie in recommendations but the implementation of the measures.
As it relates to the issue of policing in the area, Shields acknowledged that resources were a problem, especially given the fact that the population in hinterland areas has increased significantly.
He noted that there is also need for more outposts and personnel in the area.
