Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday remanded Marlon Rodney to prison on a charge with escaping from lawful custody.
It is alleged that on Sunday last while being in lawful custody at the Brickdam Police Station for a criminal offence, he escaped. The charge was indictable and the accused was not required to plead.
He is being represented by defence counsel Adrian Thompson. Rodney was also charged with unlawfully assaulting Keneisha Morgan that day. To that charge Rodney pleaded not guilty.
In making a bail application, Thompson told the court that Morgan bore a child for the accused. He added that on the day in question the couple had a misunderstanding which led to Rodney hitting Morgan.
According to Thompson, immediately after the incident the couple went to the Brickdam Police Station where a report was made. While at the station, Morgan was still not sure whether she wanted to press charges so she left the station with her partner.
Thompson said his client was later arrested and told that he would be charged for assault and escaping from lawful custody.
However, Police Prosecutor Desiree Fowler objected to bail. Fowler told the court that if released on bail it is highly likely that Rodney would interfere with Morgan since they lived together.
She also raised the issue of the likelihood of the accused fleeing the jurisdiction if placed on bail. Rodney is expected to make his next court appearance on July 24.
