Guyana National Rifle Association Handgun captain Dale Hing was in impressive form once again when he fired his way to victory in the GNRA 9mm Precision Pistol Shoot which was held at the TSU Range on Saturday last.
Hing, who captured the .22 Pistol competition a few weekends ago, proved that victory then was no fluke turning back the challenge of 13 other colleagues including the likes of senior marksmen Harold Hopkinson, Aundrea Cambridge, Handgun vice Captain Joseph Chin, Murtland ‘Chowmein’ Smith and Fullbore marksman and Treasurer Major Terrence Stuart.
Similar to the .22 competition, the shooters were required to shoot 2 ‘sighters’ of 10 rounds each at the 10 and 15 metre distances and 10 rounds at 20 meters for a total of 50 rounds of concentrated action.
Cambridge was unstoppable at the 10, and 15 metre ranges and held a comfortable lead going in to the final range at 20 meters. He was not able to keep up the intensity and Hing capitalised to take the number one spot.
At the 10metre stage Cambridge won with 196 points and 4 V-Bulls followed by Chin with 192/6, Hing and Hopkinson were tied on 192/4 each.
From the 15 metre range, he was tops again with 179/1, Hing 178/2 and Hopkinson 175/1.
Going in to the final range Hing and Hopkinson were trailing Cambridge by 5 and 8 points respectively, and the competition was on. The final stage saw fierce rivalry and because of the distance the slightest error would have resulted in shots fall out of the scoring rings.
Hing started the stage and left fellow shooters under much pressure to beat a score of 92. All hopes lied with Cambridge and Hopkinson to mount a serious challenge but they succumbed to the pressure and dropped shots out of the rings which left Hing in the top spot with 92/1 followed by Cambridge 9 points back and Stuart on 72.
Hing’s performance at this stage took his overall tally to 462/7 which earned him the championship. Cambridge had to settle for the runner-up position with 458/6, Hopkinson 432/5, Stuart 420/4 and Chin 388/9 to close out the top 5 spots.
The next event planned by the GNRA Handgun section will be the 9mm practical pistol competition where shooters will no longer be stationary, but will be required to engage targets, stationary and moving from various positions (standing, kneeling & prone) whilst on the move.
